I did it and it's incredibly hard. You're a newbie, up against long established competition. Until you become established, you'll get paid peanuts for the few jobs you can find, despite what the tabloid press may have you believe. Your customers, when you can find them, will resent every penny they pay you; they don't think about the insurance, van, tools etc that you have to carry.

The jobs that pay best are the big ones, so you'll need an apprentice or a subbie, at a huge cost and bureaucracy to you. They will let you down by going off sick after a night in the pub watching the soccer. They will turn up late or forget their tools.

It was such a good feeling to leave it all behind and get back in to IT. I may hate it, but it's easy compared to the real world.
You must have been tulipe then. My friends arrive at 10.00am, go for 2 hour pub lunch and pack up a 3pm. Easiest job in the world. Pays better than permie IT by a country mile.

Thanks for the advice, but I'm going to train in a trade as I may decide to do some property development so it'll probably be quite useful for that as well.

So the solution to HMRC clamping down on your ability to legally avoid tax, is to purposefully plan a career based around evading tax?

        Great idea.

Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the abject worship of the state.

No Socialist Government conducting the entire life and industry of the country could afford to allow free, sharp, or violently-worded expressions of public discontent.

Well until they level the playing field yes, I already pay treble in corporation tax than what would be paid in tax, NI and ER NIC's if I were a permie. Plus from next year another 2k when the dividend tax comes in, what more do they want? Where does it stop?

The youngest who is a roofer employs 8 people and they're the ones that do the work, the brother who is a bricklayer will end up taking over his father in law's building business.

Yep the both of them could fall in tulip and come out smelling of roses, me I'm the black sheep of the family

They both somehow think I'm minted, but I think that's just their view of I.T. in general.
