Do you keep your rate to yourself - or share it?

I was just thinking about this.

Personally I never share it at client co, not even with what appears to be "mate" contractors.

I know what the market pays and I know how to get what I believe is the best possible rate. Other people tend to lie or manipulate and it can cause some serious problems with hiring clients.

That question tends to be 'how much of a chump are you?'

Cos market rates are pretty fixed, you should know what someone earns from where they work and what they do (if they're a software dev at least).

Any variation I would just rate them on the chump-o-meter.
