Back in 1981 that was £105,000 from memory (my parents nearly bought it)... The 4 bedroom house they did buy (for £40,000) is now £1million so not much different...

Shortly after WW2 my uncle bought a vast rambling 20 bedroom mansion in Dorset, with a 50 acres of land, all for £400. I used to stay there as a kid, and the house and estate is worth a good £10,000,000 now.

Incredibly, very few people were interested in large houses back then, or land. Both were generally considered nothing but a burden, even places near or actually in London!

But then in the late 1940s most people had pretty low salaries. Also I think the rates, the then-equivalent of council tax, was based on something called "deemed rent", i.e. an assessment of income if the place had been rented to its fullest extent, and that may have been prohibitive. Not sure though.
