My £2500 Mondeo gave me the best part of 100,000 miles of faultless service, but when it started playing up absolutely nobody could tell me with any certainty what was wrong with it. Injectors probably, but they're not cheap and have to be coded - a right faff!
    However the more complex engines can return better MPG than the plainer type. Trade off between mileage/initial cost.

        Get something safe, and consider an auto.

            Volvos might be safe, but SUVs aren't. Yes they are big and heavy, but unstable. In an accident they roll over and over and over and...

              At £1500 I'd say a Focus because something bigger you'd be into banger territory and the cost of breaking down and missing a day billing loses all your savings.

              But for the sake of earning a bit more working on site, driving several hours a day hardly seems worth it. Have you even factored in the cost of fuel, eating away from home, etc?

                I'd agree. Excessive commuting sucks, even if you are in a Rolls Royce.

                  Air Con, Cruise, Diesel.

                  All well and good only paying £1500 if you get a decent one. Be a bit concerned that for this cheap it might not last. Last thing you want it to get up in the morning ready for 2 hours drive to find the thing wont start or whatever. Stress you dont need.

                  2 hrs each way is a killer. 5 days a week would be undoable but 3 maybe. Train an option?

                  To be honest, if I had to do three days on site I'd be considering mon-tues (stay over mon), wed wfh, thurs drive both, fri wfh. That way just one day a week where you've got the double journey and just one night away from home.

                    The v70 is an estate; widely used by motorway police;

                      A v70 isn't a real SUV, its and estate, the XC60's are the v70's jacked up with higher clearance and AWD, thewy are classed as cross overs so not as top heavy as a SUV's which are the main safety issue
