It's not so unreasonable when you consider that 'religion' is structured mysticism.

It's not though. This is easily seen by the fact that there are religious sects that are persecuted by mainstream religion precisely because of their mystical interpretation of religion.

Let's see - unfounded beliefs mentioned in this thread:

4. Sweden is an atheist state
5. The history of Christianity is written by bronze age shepherds and nomads with no education

The good news there is that the professed atheists are as human as the rest of us.

Anyway - any organisation (religious, non-religious, atheist, agnostic, political, non-political) can put its own interests before individuals, leading to abuse.

I don't mind atheism. Some of my friends are probably atheists, I have never really asked them. Probably, I drift towards and away from atheism myself sometimes. Even the saints did that, right?

I am not that keen to spend time with those who make a *big deal* about being atheist (translation: I'm better than you). Or for that matter, anyone who makes a big deal about being anything. Like having a baby in the car (translation: I'm better than you), or how fantastic their kids are (translation: I'm better than you) or about being very politically correct (translation: I'm better than you) or incorrect (translation: I'm better than you) or being really into rugby (translation: I'm better than you) or having a flash car (translation: I'm better than you), or having a degree (translation: I'm better than you)...

Are you seriously suggesting that the Pope just made that number up? Do you think he got up one morning and thought that he needed to say something that would get his name in the papers and decided it was good to accuse 2% of all priests as being paedophiles?

Well he clearly made it up to some extent unless all priests were asked to will in a survey and none of them lied

I don't know the context, I doubt he phoned the papers to tell them this - surely it was an answer to a question someone asked him. It is a strange thing to say although as I referenced already saying "1 in 50 priests is a pedophile" is fairly meaningless without knowing how common pedophilia is amongst the global population.

And as a side note 1:50 are pedophiles is very different from 1:50 are practising pedophiles / have ever abused anyone. Although I doubt most of the 'closet pedophiles' would ever tell anyone.
