Being stupid is not understanding that he decision to defend the Falklands was a combination of all those factors.

As for Putin what would happen if he decided to invade Scotland? Given the logic shown here we should feel guilt for our colonial past and let him have the place along with all the whining "victims" of the SNP.

You can't argue the wider point without denying people's right to self determination. And it isn't politics, it's basic human rights.

And what the feck point were you trying to put with that last paragraph? Try again but think through what it is you are trying to say first.

I'm saying that I doubt anyone in power then or now really gives a tulip about those islanders - or human rights (see Diego Garcia). Those islands are more likely viewed as an important strategic and economic outpost, and a pot full of mindless nationalism to be stirred whenever the plebs become restless.

Ther'll be no new war over the Falklands. Thanks to dave and his chums, the Armed Forces and especially the Royal Navy have been decimated and will not be able to mount a defence never mind re take them.

19 surface warship in active service and most of them are 15 years old or more. The only ship generally on active patrol around the Falklands tends to be a glorified fisheries protection vessel, HMS Clyde (and even that is leased to the friggin' Navy!).

The Army has 82,000 active soldiers, they could all fit inside Wembley Stadium and you'd still have 8,000 spare seats. 7 or 8 squadrons of planes, most of them antiquated Tornados.

Presumably the hidden agenda is to scale back because our armed forces are going to be subsumed into some EU defence force at some time in the future.

Can't see them going to the South Atlantic to stick it to the Argies...

Especially the Frenchies with their record of providing Super Etendards, Exocets and technicians during the war. Jeez, they wouldn't know where to land; on our shared AC or back on land with their real friends.

It is usually a type 45 defending the islands which were all built in the last few year.

One could probably take on the entire Argentine airforce.
