In my tabulation above I listed lives lost before financial cost, how many soldiers and islander's lives would you be prepared to sacrifice so this tiny community can continue to inhabit this legacy of Empire. Is there an upper limit?

To answer your question, the defence budget is c 37bn the population is c 64m. you do the math, the defence budget for the Falklands works out at over £20,000 per British Islander. I agree with that raving leftie, Simon Jenkins

In other words, 2,500 colonists cannot enjoy an unqualified veto on British government policy. Thatcher thought it was in Britain's interest to negotiate with Argentina in 1982, even when it was a dictatorship. Now that Argentina is a democracy that interest can hardly have diminished. Subsequent British governments knew this, but were too gutless to act on it.

Ho ho. Read the Jenkins article, a negotiated alternative was underway and had it been successfully concluded 255 service households would not have received the dreaded knock on the door.

          and ?
maybe in your cosseted and well-protected world that's a good reason for hoisting the white flag before someone says boo to you, on the precautionary principle I suppose.
Now trot off over there and be quiet.

Indeed, these people are so amazingly British that they want to live 8,000 miles away from Britain. They so believe in the traditional Tory values of self-reliance and not depending on the State that they require 1 soldier for every two Islanders in perpetuity, and they are so bloody One Nation that they expect that each of the rest of us pay £1 annually each just for their privilege.

            It all makes perfect sense.
So that's a Tory value is it? Is that why you support the mass clearance of the Falkland Islanders to make way for a weak claim from a foreign nation?

For those apparently averse to reading

Indeed at the very time of the Falklands war, Margaret Thatcher was transferring Hong Kong to China on similar grounds of expediency, and her favourite minister, Nicholas Ridley, was seeking a negotiated compromise on the Falklands with Argentina at the UN. This was for a transfer of sovereignty over the islands to Buenos Aires with entrenched leaseback to Britain to administer them on behalf of the 1,800 islanders, who would retain their right to remain British.

The irony is that the one thing that might have made leaseback acceptable to the islanders – a democratic Argentina – came about only through the one event that made such confidence-building impossible, the Falklands war. But that was the short-term. The short-term cannot be the end of the matter.

Lefties still praise Stalin even know we know about the genocide in the Ukraine, rhe invasion of Poland, Czechoslovakia etc and the killing more of his own population than died on both sides during the second world war, so the mass clearance of a small population must be water of a ducks back to them
Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the abject worship of the state.

No Socialist Government conducting the entire life and industry of the country could afford to allow free, sharp, or violently-worded expressions of public discontent.
