Is it possible the co-pilot had some kind of seizure or fit, and while the captain popped out to call for help the door slammed shut behind him in the confusion, and the co-pilot accidently kicked this altitude setting thingie into the starting "zero altitude" position ?
Of course that idea is absurd if the audio recording clearly indicates measured breathing and no unusual sounding background commotion. But one should try and consider every possible angle.
