Perhaps he got the wrong knob? Maybe the AM/FM radio was next to it and as he was cross border at the time was trying to tune it in to WDR2? Then once he realised his mistake, the knob fell off. Then, frantically he tries to change the altitude setting, but does not have any need nose pliers to hand. He is young, and panics, but doesn't want to own up to his boss or ATC as this would be the end of his career.

So he calms himself, and for the next 9 minutes calmly and patiently tries to rectify his mistake. But runs out of time. The EP version of West End girls playing in his headset from WDR2 while he works.

He did worse, he intentionally locked the captain out.

You'd need to reach up in front and turn a knob at about nipple height quite a few turns then move your hand to the FLCH button and press it. I don't see how it could be done accidentally.

unlikely, the selection knob is on the top panel. You need to stretch out to reach it, and apply some rotary force.
