Take your pick from the monarchy, the flag, the Army, the history of rampant conquest, the biggest empire in the world, the supremacy of the English language, anyone who lives in the countryside, the national anthem, the City of London, the Royal Navy, a nuclear deterrent, the lion and the unicorn, duffing up the French, eating loads of beef – all this, for Lefties, is a source of shame.
Now who is smearing? For the record, I am not in favour of giving someone a powerful and privileged job just because of who their Dad was, anyone who thinks we still have an Empire is delusional, I quite like the Union flag, being fluent in English has helped me gain more than one contract, I live in the middle of a National Park and I love it, nobody actually likes the anthem, I've taken a lot of money out of the City however post the massive bank bailout, I do recognise the need for reform and regulation, I favour a proportionate defence capability including, as we are an island, a strong navy, the independent deterrent is not independent, deters nobody and costs a fortune, I have several French friends and I enjoyed a chilli beefburger just last night.
If you're going to quote Orwell, I recommend his essay on the difference between Nationalism and Patriotism. It appears the Telegraph blogger never got around to reading it ….

People who 'proclaim' their political choices in this manner do my head in.
We all get one vote and we get to cast that on the day. I don't understand why she, or any other person who indulges in the 'me me me' behaviour, think that their vote is so important that it must be announced to the nation.Comment

HTHOriginally posted by vetran View PostEntitlement without responsibility is a way to ruin a society. Someone has to pay for all this, the vast majority of people's contribution is less than they take out. If too many take out then society collapses and/or the sponsors leave.
I think we should have as a goal a society where people don't have to work in order to have a reasonable standard of living, but those who want to and/or have specialist skills can do so and are rewarded for it.
Many of the jobs people do today don't really need doing anyway.
The whole "everybody is morally obliged to work" argument is pretty flaky really, in a society where we don't actually need everyone doing something and a minority can produce all that the majority require.Originally posted by MaryPoppinsI'd still not breastfeed a naziOriginally posted by vetranUrine is quite nourishingComment

ps: BBC News - Election 2015: How close are you to the political centre?
Your answers place you to the right of the political centre in comparison with the rest of the population in 2014.
You scored 18 out of 25
A score of 5 is the furthest left and 25 is the furthest right. Around a fifth of the population have similar views to you. Your answers place you a long way from the political centre in any year but you would have been closest to the centre of the political spectrum from 2004-2007 and in 2010.Originally posted by MaryPoppinsI'd still not breastfeed a naziOriginally posted by vetranUrine is quite nourishingComment
