Permies constantly joking about contractors being rich
Yeah I am confused by this... doesn't being a 'leftie' mean that you want someone in power who charges more tax so they can hand out more to the lazy and the feckless (and of course people in need). In that case I don't know any contractors like that. Or it could mean left-handed but not sure why they would earn less than right-handed people. Or of course he didn't mean to say leftie at all and accidently added it in and is simply laughing at contractors in general being considered rich... at least in comparison to recruitment agents...

He is just a fecking agent presumably with gelled hair and driving an A3
I politely tell people that it's not worth that much, you have to pay 3 kinds of tax that they won't (corporation, VAT and dividend) on a quarterly or annual basis, and that I could be told to leave tomorrow with no recourse. That you have to have an accountant - and a limited company that you're the director of. And a business bank account. And indemnity insurances. And that if they're still interested after that, that I'll happily discuss it over a coffee.

But why? Folk here trot this out all the time to newbies on here and claim they trot it out to curious permies, but the reality is I'd expect (hope) that most of us are financially benefiting from contracting. It's one thing to not engage with the silliness or to point out that it's not all roses but I don't see the point in pleading a hard life - most of us probably taking home considerably more than our permie counterparts. My company profits are around double per month what my permie salary take home was and my job hasn't changed that much.
