    Nope.

Why was she carrying a loaded gun in her handbag in a supermarket?

Common sense would indicate if that particular supermarket was sooo dangerous you don't shop there with your kids and would simply choose another one.

You want it loaded because when you need it then the last thing you want is to use 2nd hand to load first bullet.

Now why wasn't the gun's safety on? Good guns have more than one safety lock -

      Glock

Maybe she was shooting at someone earlier and forgot to put the safety back on when she was done? Or maybe she was opening doors with it like Homer Simpson. Maybe she took the safety off cause she saw someone she didn't like the look of.

Do you know how stupid this sounds and is?

It's not stupid at all. The accident happened because the woman failed to take the necessary precautions when handling and conveying a potentially dangerous piece of equipment. It's as simple as that.

Someone above mentioned the fact that guns are designed to kill - that is precisely the reason why this is a dumb ant-gun argument!

If a woman was run over in a car by her 2 year old, having been left unattended in the front seat with the engine running, the scenario would be exactly the same. The cries of stupidity would be exactly the same.

If a woman left her baby unattended and it pulled a kettle of scalding water in it's head the cries of stupidity would be exactly the same. There are baby-proof methods of boiling water - yet we don't outlaw kettles.

The fact that guns are designed for the purpose of killing (or threats of) elicits an emotional response in a culture which has been brainwashed into thinking about guns in the way that they do.

            Is that a real question?

            Weapons aid in defence -->

guns are a very capable weapon when used correctly -->

buying a gun (from tescos or the gun shop) means you now have possession of a weapon -->

you are now, all things being equal, more able to defend yourself from someone else who might have a size advantage - or someone in possession of an otherwise illegal weapon -->

ergo, your are safer than you were before you purchased a weapon ?

The point is that in countries where you're allowed to possess a firearm, and have it available - not locked in a cabinet in the loft, then you don't have to fight off an intruder.

Being prohibited from owning a firearm means that you have to suffer such an event in the first place.

I'm not really sure how any of the rest counters any of the points I made though.

Interestingly (not really - but it might be if for people who think more guns == more murders) the murder rate in the UK went up very significantly after Dunblane - despite the gun ban.

Your points are guns make society safer. You also seem preoccupied with the fact you can't shoot intruders in the UK or wave a gun around to frighten them.

As someone who had an intruder in her house the fact he got disturbed by voices was enough to make him flee. No guns needed let alone any other violence needed. If guns were legal he would have come armed.* Even in other cases I know intruders didn't use violence.

*He was caught while trying to flee and had nothing on him.

Just think how dangerous the world would be if guns had never been invented!

                      Defending you from what?

Who are you as a law abiding citizen afraid of in the UK where you need a gun?

Violent criminal gangs aren't interested in burglary as the pickings are too slim.
