'Tis of course slightly odd that there are now far more illegal handguns in the UK than there were before handguns were banned.

Easier to classify as all would be illegal I would guess. So if the police came across a handgun then it was illegal - full stop.

What about nearly 4000 people dieing on the road, including horrible crashes where young drive with their friends kill everybody in a car by crashing it???

A killing by a 2 year old.... Good grief, how can people let it happen that a 2 year old can come into contact with, let alone discharge a handgun? Pure, unadulterated stupidity.

I read this one as a tragic, bizarre accident that's been blown up as a good news story. In fact, that it can BE such a big news story only highlights what a freak occurrence this is.

I don't see this as being useful to support either pro OR anti gun arguments.

That's what insurance companies are used for - to price young people of the road.

Only in the sense of "dangerous things shouldn't exist because they're dangerous" arguments though? I wonder how many people are killed/injured every year due to very small children getting their hands on power tools, car controls, etc - probably more parents are killed by tripping over toys left on the stairs!

I'm actually fairly anti-gun, certainly the ability to treat gun ownership as a casual thing or carry one around with you as a matter of course, but again this just seems too much a (horrible) freak accident to suggest things should be different.

As you're fully aware: the point is that if the lady didn't actively carry the handgun (a device designed and built purely for the purpose of killing humans) then she wouldn't have been killed by the two year old.

People die because of many causes, silly and serious and people take risks all the time, some risks can be mitigated significantly like NOT carrying a loaded handgun.
