Again, it must be analyzing name searches and suchlike recursively and assembling "possible acquaintance" networks.

There's a reason their API is called the Facebook Graph. That's what they've built, a huge graph with people as nodes and connections between them as edges. Start traversing that and the old x degrees of Kevin Bacon phenomenon kicks in very rapidly
