Where I currently work, in the system programming team (probably one of the most technical areas) there are 5 women and 3 men, 1 is the team leader and an other is the manager of the whole department. The women outnumber the men for one very technical area....





(admittedly if look at the whole department, women are in a minority)

Maybe this is one of those problems that enforces itself. Few females want to be engineers simply because there are few female engineers, ie they don't want to be sat in a class surrounded by a lot of randy young males with no other girls to talk to or make friends with.

Attitudes embrace both sexes. It has always been the case that there are few women in some technical areas. When I was at Uni there was one woman doing chemistry and none in physics and engineering but plenty doing pharmacy and social studies. Not much changed since as far as I can see. Male exclusion? I don't see how. There were no rules stopping women being engineers, they just weren't interested.

Couldn't be to do with nature I suppose? Men and women are different, not just physically but mentally. As long as everyone plays a useful role, does it really matter that every single sphere has an equal representation?

Isn't it simply a repeating pattern - women don't want to enter a male dominated world, so it remains a male-dominated world?

So why is the suggestion of "hairdressing" perceived as a put down? No-one's pushing for more boys to become hairdressers. It's a sad fact that careers traditionally chosen by women are still seen as inferior to those chosen by men.
