What has testosterone and being able to get it up got to do with sperm count/fertility?

it was an attempt at a humourus riposte to SueEllen's belief us balding studs worry about hair loss.

There's been a few tweets (which have links to blogs and things) recently. Bob martin has had a think about how some of his talks could have been innocently (i.e. unintentionally) condescending to women audiences after 1 or 2 women picked him up on things.

He said "COBOL was invented by Grace Hopper. Here she is, in her little hat". I don't really get the problem, but I know Americans can be especially proud of their military etc, so perhaps he wouldn't say 'in his little hat' about a male serviceman.

Anyhow, a lot of them are jumping on the anti-gamergate thing citing harassment of women etc, not realising that GamerGate is rammed full of female gamers. It's got nothing to do with misogyny. But that's a whole different topic.

I know Martin works for though works, and they're mega left-leaning, so it shouldn't come as a surprise I guess.

Anyhow, feminism hasn't really been on my radar until recently - I've always set it aside for nut jobs, and wouldn't bother wasting my time talking to nut jobs about it. But recently I've seen it encroaching into the software industry (probably years late) - and interestingly It made me reconsider my stance about talking to nutters. If I lived in the US, where an awful lot of people take their religion very seriously, then it might suddenly seem reasonable to 'preach' my atheism - because in that context it really is encroaching into my every day life.

Anyway... those Martin fowler examples for you:

This one cites 'micro aggressions' (in this case not as bad as sitting with your legs more than six inches apart which i've seen before ) - including referring to a mixed-gender team with 'Hey, guys...', referring to women as 'girls' (perhaps I'd better stop saying 'the boys and I' too), and describing software or algorithms as 'sexy' (which makes me think I'm writing the wrong kind of software ).

And thought works tweeted their Brazil offices 'male privilege' checklist which they have pinned to the wall !

                  https://twitter.com/thoughtworks/sta...12834525446144

To be fair with that one, I have no idea what life is like in Brazil - but the items in the checklist are the same old ones we hear everywhere. Imagine if there was a 'male privilege' checklist stuck on the wall at your work! No 'female privilege' checklist mentioned.

THoughtworks & others have also been tweeting about gender pay gaps - and again it's hard to get a firm grasp of because they operate all over the world - but in many case in the western world at least, the official stats show that despite the so called pay gap, women under a certain age (fifty something i think - dunno why) actually earn more than men on average for the same work. 'the same work' when concerned with an apparent gap, is comparing men who work a 5 day week with women who work part time. That's clearly not 'the same'.

Anyhow, the recent uptrend (that i've noticed at least) in my industry is what caused me to look at Karen's youtube channel again - where i found what I thought was a very useful video for explaining the anti-feminism standpoint, and why intact many anti-feminists - including many female ones - actually campaign for men's rights instead (especially when it comes to parental rights, etc).

Some people didn't like her video evidently - which is why it's taken me a week to reply.

Big but kinda boutiquey consultancy. Regarded as experts in the industry (software at least). They've a lefty (as far as i can tell - it might not be so bad) leaning ethos when it comes to 'social change':

A community of passionate individuals whose purpose is to revolutionize software design, creation and delivery, while advocating for positive social change.
I keep an eye on them for their podcasts, etc. And their tech radar:

Considered trying to work for them, but their social change drive is a big part of what they do (at least they say so) and their interview process, and I just don't agree with a lot of it (as well intentioned as it is).

They're supposed to be pretty tough to get into anyway, so it probably makes little difference in the end.
