Still a 3 minute lag on a live stream is pretty cr@p no matter what the reason.

So he's not saying Android is to blame? The 1+3 has a pretty beefy CPU. You don't need a top-spec CPU to live-stream video anyway... a top-spec Android phone should've been included for comparison.

If he hadn't had the iPhone next to it would he have noticed? Digital video streaming always has a fair lag compared to live TV so does it really matter?

I'd be wondering if it was the iPlayer implementation to blame, unless you tried other streaming services. It might even have deliberately built up a longer buffer to cope with network issues!

I think the lesson we can take from this is that the iPhone is a wonderful divine creation and all other phones are 2nd rate, I just hope Apple don't jeopardise that by doing something crazy like getting rid of the headphone jack...
