It's a bit difficult to "facilitate democratic elections" when Assad doesn't want them, but you carry on appeasing the dictator while self-flagellating and wringing your hands about the poor refugees. In case you haven't noticed, those "poor Syrian people" are fleeing the country in droves, I doubt that asking Assad nicely for elections (which are unlikely to be free and fair) will bring them back as quickly.Comment

So Russia is now, under the pretence of destroying ISIS, bombing the crap out of the Syrian rebels, the same rebels the West have been tacitly supporting.
The only thing that might save us is our fear that Putin is such a mad man that we back off and let him get on with it. Just like Ukraine.
