My contract with this mob ended last week - fortunately I managed to find a new contract up the road for better rate.

New CEO telling perms 'we don't need contractors or consultants - we can do this ourselves people... '

My PM convinced they will be back in hiring mode fairly soon.

Driving home on last day and got call from agent with the 'bad news' about the 10% rate cut.

Me to agent - 'my contract ended today...'

Agent - 'oh... I thought it was next week...'

The expression "and you have to keep paying all those guys even when you've got it right and most of the work is done" springs even closer.

Crazy thing about all this is that no one appears to be checking who is leaving at end of week, no-one is being asked to do hand-overs etc.

Does your original contract say the notice period is 7 days (or less) then? If your notice period is 30 days they can't, surely, give you 7 days notice of termination.

Of course with a nice MOO clause the point is moot rather, they can give you notice and stop giving you work the last 3 weeks, but legally speaking that's not the same thing, is it?

TBH, that part doesn't surprise me at all. When HBoS were doing similar cuts in 2008/09, I got a call from ex manager about two weeks after the notice period expired with a frantic "Where the hell are you" message. I explained that she'd terminated my contract and the response was a pretty stunned "But no one leaves when you do that !" Unbe-feckin-lievable.

The problem is that most of the saps just roll over and accept it. If contractors would leave en-masse then these emails would stop being issued. Solidarity brothers !!

They confirmed my offer for 12 months on 16th April after 51 days of waiting to get the work order approved. My credit checks were completed on 17th, past two years reference checks are completed today morning and now the agency called in one hour back with the bad news that the team I am joining where everybody is contractor and all of them got a rate reduction of 10% last Thursday so hiring manager wants 10% rate reduction for me as well, otherwise it is unfair to rest of the team according to them. Now I already put notice to my current contract (where the rate was same as previously agreed rate of the Bank) and I've to accept the rate reduction hoping would not happen again. My rate is still decent one but would probably have to walk out if it happen again in next 12 months.

Find a new gig and then give these guys notice of termination when it's sorted. It'll serve them right.
