    City of London

    Hi all,

I have been working for 2,5 years at a company based in Canary Wharf, London. In order for me to start claiming travel expenses back again, could you please advise where my next contract has to be?
Can I claim back travel expenses if the contract is outside of Canary Wharf for example?

    Many thanks.

I believe your journey (and the cost of the journey is an important factor) has to be significantly different.

Do a search for 24 month rule. We really should have a Sticky.

In order to reset the rule your journey has to substantially change, so it entirely depends on where the new contract is in comparison.

Have a search through the Legal & Professional forums for 24 month rule and you'll find lots of threads on the subject.

Assuming you live outside central London sadly the answer will be somewhere outside London.

There is an explicit example within HMRC's documentation that covers a company moving 4 tube stations....

And the rules are actually quite simple. Is the journey substantially different to the previous one. If yes its a new location, if not its not....

This is not necessarily true IMO - I accept it's contentious.

If the OP is travelling by train from Reading to Paddington and then to Canary Wharf by tube (+DLR?), but then gets a new gig which is in Paddington, then the journey and the cost is different - IMO of course.

It was actually mentioned by the Office of Tax Simplification in one of their early reports - the City of London shouldn't be viewed as a single workplace by HMRC, it's not the way the legislation is written it's just their own interpretation of it. The way they wish the law was, as opposed to the way it really is (BET anyone?!)

I think you are going about it all wrong. Don't let the tax dictate your work IMO. If you get a good solid gig then just pay your travel. Permies do so not sure why it should be such an issue to us.
