I've never sent a 'Thank you for interviewing me' but have sometimes followed up the next day expanding on something where we drifted off topic and I never completed the answer or not quite remembered all the details in the answer. I've tracked their email down from Linkedin or guessed from their corporate website.

Never even got a thank you for the info though. Think I might as well abuse them for having no idea how to conduct an interview instead

Therein lies the problem sometimes. Agent won't give you client contact details because they're afraid you'll try and cut them out of the deal. So its down to linkedin/guessing.

Agree that its a good idea but I do worry it comes across a little stalkerish when you have to resort to guessing email etc.

That strikes me as pointless TBH, anyone can google an answer when they get home.

Of course, if on the job you get stuck you can always google anyway. So maybe interviews should just consist of one question "What would you do if you can't figure out a problem" where the only needed answer is "Google".

Technical interviews where they expect you to know the exact format of an obscure command always piss me off. In reality, as you say, google is your friend!

I quite like the idea of follow up communication.

What harm can it do? You didn't get the gig so they will either just bin it and it have no detremental effect or you increase your chances should a role arise.

If I took candidate A over candidate B and A didn't work out or we quickly needed another similar person Candidate B would stick in my mind becuase of the follow up. The first thing I would think is 'christ I won't have to vet and interview again'.

                  Nothing to lose IMO.

I always send a thank you note after an interview.

Based on the cynicism exhibited on some of these pages, God only knows what those "thank you" notes will read like!
