Accept contract offer or not?

Hi All,

Keen to get your opinion on whether I should accept a recent contract offer.

Background: My recent roles have been as a project manager managing the delivery team to get xyz tech product into the market place. i.e. doing a proper PM role.

The contract I've been offered is more of a support role/PMO. I would be doing reporting, general admin stuff and picking up odds and ends, but not managing a team to deliver a tech product. Additionally, it's also not really at the rate I want.

My question is: will having a 'less beefy' contract role on my CV damage my CV in the longer term? Should I wait it it out and get a contract doing a 'proper PM role'. Or should I take the contract, given that the market seems to be a bit slower at the moment? I've been looking for 2 weeks.

This is someone not getting their head around being a freelance contractor .

@Untouchable1 - you aren't a PM, you're a contractor. Being a PM is how you normally earn money for YourCo. If you can earn money by doing something else then why wouldn't you? My last four roles have been 2 service architects, one PM and one interim Service Delivery Manager. They all paid the mortgage.

I find this situation a little difficult to believe so am erring towards sockie troll.

Very rarely will a client take on people over experienced. You will just get bored and/or get offered work later at a better rate and then ditch the client for the better offer. Just because you can PM doesn't always mean you can PMO either.

I believe a CV should show consistency of roles, if you keep moving or switching with each contract then how can you keep a consistent career path or be taken seriously for roles, especially if you apply for a PM role next and your previous role was PMO support, questions will be asked also it could limit your probability of being put forward for the role.

In the end it is your decision, but you have to think about how you can market your skills going forward.

It depends on how you format your CV.

What's a "career path"? I'm already the Director and sole owner of a succesful (if very small) consultancycompany....

More to the point, people hire skills and experience. Sometimes knowing more than one trade is quite valuable, and a useful USP.
