Ive done something silly!

Prior to being selected for interview I received an email from the agency quoting the rate for a Test analyst (TA) role. I paid little attention simply because there was no job yet. Further down the line I was indeed interviewed for the TA role. However during the interview I was actually offered and accepted a Test Lead role. Next day I got a call from the agency saying I got the job and she told me the rate. I then signed the contract. A few weeks down the road I stumble across the initial email and find that the rate quoted for the TA role was the same as the rate I was being paid for the Test Lead role! Stupid me. Now, having signed the contract I'm not sure of the legalities in renegotiating my rate given the proof I have. I'd appreciate any feedback on this.

You could try - if you don't ask you don't get.

Don't expect anything to come of it though - you've got nothing to negotiate with since you signed the contract. Bit of a lesson learned with this really.

I don't get this. Where is the problem? They offered both roles at the same rates but you are expecting more for the TL? I don't understand. What proof do you have? That you didn't read or digest information properly and now want more money? Not exactly qualities of either a TA or TL role surely? It wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility that both were on the same rate. You wouldn't expect it but I have seen it before.

I hope you showed a bit more dilligence in getting your contract reviewed and putting it outside IR35...... You did do that didn't you?

Unless you are going to walk you have bob hope of turning this one around and I would think arguing your case kinda demostrates your own failure so you are in a funny situation. Pretty poor show if you walk due to your own fault as well. Might be a case of swallowing this one if the rate is ok as it is.

As Cojak says, it's worth a try, at least a mention. But as the others say: having already ascertained you're willing to work for £x, the client would have been a bit daft to offer you £x + y for y>0.

No, he was happy with the rate for the TA role. True his stupidity has cost him but he'll learn from that. He's little chance of getting the client to pay more now though.

Agree with the above, you've agreed the rate. To be honest the original e-mail probably was a misunderstanding and they had you in mind for the role you got. I can't believe halfway through the interview they changed their mind. It seems more an argument about your "job title". The rate the agent would be giving you would be the rate the client gave minus his margin.

I mean a Lead Tester is still a Tester.

Since your interview partner didn't mention rate I presume they assumed it had been agreed.

Only in the sense they have Tester in the title

Agree if you were happy with the rate and agreed it just live with it and learn from it, titles are banded around constantly by agents who don't necessarily have a clue what the job entails it's always best to clarify the role at interview.
