I just accidently gave away the game to another agent

I got a new contract offered informally last Friday, bizarrely i was talking to the HR person directly at the company - the agent seemed ok with this.

Anyway to cut a long one short an agent with the same name and a similar sounding voice (ie sleazy) called up this morning. Wires were crossed, names were mentioned then after about a minute of conversation i realised it was not the agent about this job but another one i spoke to last week.

So this other agent has got my contact now and will probably be ringing hassling them and asking about vacancies etc. He was trying every trick in the book to get leads out of me last week, and now i've just gone and handed him one.

Shall i do something proactive here, or just hope nobody notices/cares?

This. Any further meddling will likely make it worse. Deny all knowledge until your contract is signed and through the door.

Agents are only slimey and devious because some people reward them for doing so and keep the circle going. I think the only thing you can do here is apologise to all your fellow contractors and then settle down to a good Flagellation session.

He probably asked you have you been on any interviews lately,

          you reply yes

he asks where and what were the names and you reply XYZ and ABC

He now goes in and gets an exclusive on that job and you get nothing for it and the HR hate you because they have a recruitment consultant pestering them all day.

Phone up the client and tell them the slimy agent from agency obtained confidential information from you through impersonating another agent. Say you have told the agent that the information was confidential and was obtained through deception but you are letting the client know as a "courtesy" in case the unscrupulous agent tries to contact them...

There was no deception, we started chatting about the weekend and the football and then it was just sheer coincidence that the conversation we started having about this other position fit in perfectly with the job i was after. Eventually he said something that conflicted and i said, hold on i spoke to x at y last week and they said blah blah. Then the penny dropped.

Anyway, i spoke to the legit agent today and they're drawing up the contract now.

Can't believe this. The tulips dragged it on for a week and then said "they couldn't get the role signed off".

Suspect i was being used as backup to a contractor who was yet to extend, or something like that.

Thankfully i saw through there nonsense and have other interviews lined up.

                  What a tulip week.

The interview i had tomorrow has now been cancelled.

I've gone from having an informal offer and a backup interview, to nothing in 2 working days.

It's no fun this happening but I have to say, that is contracting for you. If we all posted our cancelled/failed/pulled interviews the forum would sink under the weight.

                    Chin up and plug on.
