Or the job doesn't exist and they're trying to target different salary levels with the same tulip.

But there could be other reasons for this rather than the agent just trying to pull a fast one.

It's an Invitation to treat. Hey, if you are looking at buying a car and you talk to the shiny arse salesmen and say, "I'll pay 5,000-5,420" then say "ahh, maybe I'm looking at 3,000 to 4,500" will he tell you to bugger off??. NO, he will try to do bushiness with you. You have to try to do the same thing.

Get in there and if you think you are good enough to command the higher rate. But yeah, make sure the client knows what you are getting paid so the agency doesn't go and take the piss.

Errr.....we couldn't care less about your salary. We pay day rates - what you pay yourself as a salary is none of our business??

                  Like:

The client has moved the budget
The client cannot get sign off
Someone has rationalised the ridiculous rates the company was prepared to pay
                  Procurement have declined budget
Procurement ceiling is exceeded above sign off level

                  Etc etc etc.

You have a choice. Apply, or don't apply. Respond, or don't respond. They've told you what they want - if you're interested then go for it - if not, walk away.

                  Simples.

                    balls up ?

initially advertised what client was prepared to pay (including commission), then re-advertised with what agent was willing to pay from client's payment.

                    £500-£542 = £300-£450 + commission
