Saw a role advertised on Jobserve today at 375-400. Called in morning and said I would be available for the role. Got called by the agency and was told that 4 people being put forwards at 250 and 275 - told them I'm not interested but they were not really fussed so obviously genuine. Guys whoever and wherever you are stop spoiling the party for the rest of us!

Some people really do like working close to home and given the sparsity of roles opp north will take a big hit on the rate just to avoid long commutes and/or staying away.Coffee's for closers -

So you earn £350 to £400 a day but work away from home, have long commutes, travel costs and accom costs. Plus you do not get to be in your own bed at night, be with your family or able to pop down the pub to be with your mates.
Even stuff like going out to the gym or grabbing your bike for a ride or going out for a meal are all fecked up.
Yes, Johnny no mates contractor can go to a hotel gym by himself, or go to a restaurant by himself or...
You get the point.Comment

Interview at £275 and raise your price later to £375. The agent will go ballistic, but if the client really wants you and they can't be arsed to interview another contractor at the last minute, they'll pay the going rate.
Don't worry about annoying the agent, they have memories like goldfish.
Anyway it's not like you have anything better to do if you're on the bench. Interview practise plus a chance to get a reasonable contract close to home, or watch Jeremy Kyle and Property Ladder...?

You do coding type stuff don't you? I don't so maybe I have this wrong but looking across our office which is akin to a scene from Slumdog Millionaire isn't this type of carry on a bit common now?
Sounds like a pretty good approach to me. Migh backfire and you end up working in the middle of my office but its workInterview at £275 and raise your price later to £375. The agent will go ballistic, but if the client really wants you and they can't be arsed to interview another contractor at the last minute, they'll pay the going rate.

Not currently on bench but looking for a decent (not amazing) rate close to home but currently rates in Manchester are beyond ridiculous. Don't know if it's gonna change soon.....Originally posted by swamp View PostInterview at £275 and raise your price later to £375. I just got contacted by a Manchester agency about a contract in London (bang in the city centre too).
The rate was £400 - which is at least 20% lower than I would have thought. The same place were offering roles in 2007 for £525... and they say we've got inflation!
What's going on?!
