Located where I am I have a pretty wide area that I can look for contracts, I guess with in two hours I can be anywhere from the midlands to the Newcastle, coast to coast but it still seems most of the very lucrative contracts are M4 Corridor / South East so if I were to apply it would probably mean staying away through the week. I'm single and my kids don't live with me so nothing would prevent me from working away, does anyone have any experience, good or bad for working away through the week?

I live in the North West, and commute to London (on train + tube) every day. It's a bit of a ballache, leaving home at 6am everyday and not getting back til 8pm+ but the money is worth it (compared to a permie role).
I have a wife + kid, and while i can see the wife for a couple of hours each evening, it hurts not being able to see the kid during the week. I only get to speak on the phone. But i make the weekend count.
I'm only on my 2nd gig and have just enjoyed 4 weeks on the bench, i've also had an extra 6 weeks off in the the year (== 10 weeks compared to a dire 4 weeks in a permie role). And still have money in the bank to survive for half a year.
I don't want to do this forever, i just want to make enough money so i can get plan B up and runningContracting: more of the money, less of the sh1tComment

I've done plenty of stay away all week and 9 months of away for a fortnight as the travel time was too crappy to go home every weekend, lovely area though so no shortage of things to do on the weekends away, it doesn't bother me at all.Comment

Living in the North West and presently working in Surrey. I have done weekly commuting on and off in the UK and Europe for almost 20 years. I have never really settled into it and never will, I suspect. But it is needs must right now. Work in Surrey or sit on the bench. I really hope next gig will be in NW but I can't see it happening unless things pick up a lot.Public Service Posting by the BBC - Bloggs Bulls**t Corp.

I leave at 5:30am for 75 min drive to Cheshire down M6 / M56 then back home for 5:30pm (leaving ClientCo at 4pm sharp).
I love seeing my kids every day, but wife hates me messing the house up and eating the stuff in the fridge, so in Jan, when the current contract ends, I'll be searching for a gig back in London area! And on the eighth day God said, "Okay, Murphy, you're in charge!"Comment
