Is it worth calling agents after sending CV..?

    Guys,

I have seen many posts recommending to call agents & confirm your interest & also to help them to notice your CV. I have been trying to call these agents (around 10 of them) in last few days. But my experience is - none of them will pick your calls, always receptionist will put you straight in to voice mail, they never call back & once an agent attended my call(by mistake ?)asked me to wait & put me straight in to his voice mail..!!. Remember some of these calls are to 0870/0845 numbers..! So they get paid for our calls also.

So I am wondering is it worth calling agents after sending the CV ? Any one got luck just because your call i.e. agent noticed your CV then & got interview..??

    Thanks.

I think it's 50/50. Some people don't bother, some people swear by it. I don't call them, for the reasons you mention, and because I'm convinced that if they think they can get you in somewhere they'll call you almost before you've finished clicking send. If they don't, then no phone call is going to change their mind.

If you've got the time to spare, why not. If you have a contract and are scouting around with less urgency, you might decide the time investment per contract is not worth it.

Agents do seem to work 90% on the phone, they always seem to prefer to phone rather than email (maybe so there's no record of their lies ), so phoning them is sensible if you are chasing a particular role IMO.

I like to think that calling makes a difference but I think Bunk might be right.

But I don't think that calling the ones that you particularly want would hurt...

Once I saw a role that I knew I would get an interview for if I called the agent and told them to look at my CV.

I did exactly that and got an interview the same day.

That's the only time I ever did that with any success so it depends a lot on the role and how strong you feel you are in the areas required.

What has the role got to do with it or how strong you feel? If the agent isn't bothered he isn't bothered. Your one example that got you your first contact role isn't exactly a strong grounding a trend.

I am with Bunk again. Occasionaly I will follow up a particular role that I am particualarly interested in for rate or location reasons and try go the extra mile but it rarely made any difference and if anything often left me feeling more deflated than normal so back to generally not bothering.

Thanks for that information, but what do you think about calling agents back?
