Personally I have been suprised by how little banks have been affected. Most people at the IB I am at seem totally disconnected from the real world. But it still pays so I will make hay while the going is good.

I was refering to situations such as Barclays shedding all 650 contractors at Radbroke last December plus the raft of 4 figure job losses announced at most of the big names over the past year. The placed I have heard of have had a fairly turbulent year with contractors and permies alike starting to worry about their jobs however secure they seemed to be prior to this marlarky. It appear that is over now and its all hands to the pump.

I agree on the outlook for 2010. But once QE starts being withdrawn there will be alot of pain to be shared round. And I suspect the banks will be asked to contribute alot. Possibly we will see banks(like JP Morgan or Goldmine Sucks) withdrawing from the UK.

Because the contract rate would be 600 - 800 perday ... and the tax would not be deducted at source so you could be bringing in close to 200K with the same job security

Maybe too much office politics involved? Hard to say until you try. Also no guarantee that you will be excluded from office politics just because you are a contractor. I'd take the offer if you are happy with everything.

Why speculation? TA roles regularly attract £700 a day (Im in the running for one at the moment. You can bet that they don't get out to jobserve) a basic unix engineering role at an average IB will regularly pay to the mid £500's...

                    /ˈɪg.nər.ənt s/US pronunciation symbol/-nɚ-/ n [U]

lack of knowledge, understanding or information about something

You may wish to check jobserve. Plenty of IB roles in the rate range he quoted. I know, I'm currently working on one of them.
