Just wondering what kinds of side projects people are running while they are on the bench to bring in money? Are people working casual jobs? Doing what?

I'm looking for some admin type work around where I live until more testing jobs come up where they are not looking for brain surgery as a skill. -
Nothing here.
Everytime I think of an idea, I scour the net and see that someone else already does the same thing. With no start-up capital and no killer idea, it's back to the grindstone.Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

in my current job i didnt get a raise for two years (only bonus which are again taxable ) so i worked on some freelance websites like odesk.com/elance etc to get some additional income. additionally you can also run some blogs it kinda works in the sense that you can get some revenue (enough to cover your hosting + something additional) and also get you to make some kinda connections.
ofcourse bear in mind both these activities are not possibly the best use of your time in you have a higher earning potential, but just my 2p of advice.Comment

You could take up playing internet poker if you have a good maths brain and aren't naturally a gambler. Buy a book, practice on penny tables first, etc.
However due to the inherent risky, I wouldn't advise this with any money you can't afford to lose. So, not much help really.
On the other hand, you might try sites like oDesk which are a slightly more upmarket version of RentaCoder (in my opinion). Even with rates pushed down by hordes of Asian guys, you can get the equivalent of £100/day which is pathetic on the contracting side but beats casual work, allows you to maybe learn some new skills, and you have no travelling expenses.

I looked at guru.com (you can pick up piece-work in a number of fields working remotely). But as said above, rates are low due to offshore types working for peanuts.
I looked into writing software for iphone & android, but couldn't be bothered to set up the IDEs.
In the end I looked to reduce my outgoings like travel (walk more, go out less), fired the gardener (keep up with the digging yourself), cancel gym membership because you wont need it.
I also did more around the home to make it easier for my wife to do more hours.
Also get your unwanted stuff onto ebay; its amazing what people will pay for."take me to your leader"Comment
