    Temporary role or a contract?

Job offer 1 - Temporary fixed term 12 month role for Civil Service. Paid as an employee £60k, sickness covered and 27.1% employer contribution to salary. Hybrid working.

Job offer 2 - Contract for 12 months for Civil Service. £350 day rate inside IR35 via umbrella company. Hybrid working.

I have always had temporary jobs and would really appreciate some help in choosing between the two please - I know a job offer is about more than the money but need to make a financial comparison before thinking of the other aspects too. Thank you.

I take it that the £350pd is before tax, NI and the levy is paid?

Agents are a bunch of shysters, aren’t they?

Thank you, I've used the calculators on this site and have found that Option 1 does in fact pay more than Option 2 which isn't what I was expecting at all. Also annoying is that Option 2 was advertised as £385pd and they rang me BEFORE interview to say they've now reviewed it and changed to £350 ....it's made me so cautious of contract roles now.

If I had the other contract I would have refused to attend the interview.

You have to learn to push back on agents.

I think even at £385 the £60,000 contract pays better (partly because of the pension) but it’s a lot closer.

I really should have a think about what the multiplier between an inside daily rate and an annual salary should be. I suspect the contract is only worth it if the salary is less than 140* (or even 130*) daily rate.^

^ remember that a salary is fixed where a contract has a whole set of points against it including zero notice and furloughs which may reduce the actual take home pay to zero.

                  PS.
And an agent with those scruples may well try to bully you into accepting that £350 (“did we say £350? We meant £340”) contract.

Just put the phone down on him if he does.

just rememberevert single agent and recruiter is only doing it until they land a spot on Love Island or become an Instagram influencer.
