You could tell them "if you insist on doing it this foolish way it's gonna cost you"? I don't even know how you accept a credit card payment!
What Eek says I think - just US firms being US firms. Long story short is I wrote/own some software that I (occasionally - this is no retirement plan, sadly!) sell licences for, and in typical corporate fashion there's a complex chain of companies involved and the last one seems to want to use card.

Better than the time I sold it to a bank and they would only pay by cheque. Which took 3 months to arrive, then HSBC promptly lost so I had to request another. Imagine how funny I found that.

But yeah, I've basically done as you've said - added 3.5% for card, free if they just pay to my Wise USD account

Erm, not in this scenario, I do deal with a lot of international payments but have never come across this scenario, where the payment is being made to a credit card.... We send and receive international payments 99% of the time via bank transfer, and the remaining 1% of these will go via the likes of Equals FX cards, or similar.

          I’m know, I’m slipping!

Seriously though, I can’t think of any other time I have come across this, where a client making payment to a credit card is the only option, so if they are insisting, I would insist they pay the charges!

I've seen it a lot in SaaS sale type situations, you have a manager willing to spend decent amounts of money to solve a problem but not wishing to suffer the other type of pain involved in getting accounting to pay the actual bill.

It's why you need to accept credit cards as a software provider...
