Banks - BYOD or not?

Some of the banks I've contracted at I wish I'd taken a baseball bat as my device of choice.

One previous banking client had some very pro-BYOD ideas (although the IT Security guys disagreed and would have preferred a KYDISH policy - "Keep Your Dodgy Insecure tulip at Home").

I've heard conflicting things about Bank WiFi

When I started my current gig I signed up to the WiFi using the bank's self service portal and aside from the usual (no pornography, no hacking etc.) I was under the impression that it's OK for personal use. It's even called "WiFi for personal devices". I had it set up on my phone (personal use) and on my personal laptop (which I do not use for work but just to check my business emails etc.)

I've since been told by other permies (managers) that it's not allowed for personal use. I have mobile data so for me it's not a big deal but why call it personal WiFi?

You check your business mail in your time on your connections. Not client time and their Wi-Fi. You don't need a phone and a laptop for mails either. I'd say you need to think about the way you work, not blame some random wording on a clients website.

Surely if you're bright enough to secure a banking gig, you're bright enough to figure out that BOYD and hooking it up to company WiFi for personal surfing/emails isn't the right thing to do?

Have you seen the calibre of people working in investment banking?

My point is that if you offer personal WiFi, and there is no mention that it can only be used for work purposes only (And in any case if you did BYOD you would likely need to install a certificate or some bank approved application to access the network) then how would a poor simple permie know what he was doing was wrong, although in this case I suspect the manager didn't know what he was on about.

I'm only thinking about the permies, I have their best interests at heart

I fire up my MBP and use their VPN via the company wifi, as the monitors are so rubbish.

I just treat it the same as WFH.

Were you not issued with some Security policies when you started. More often than not internet/wifi usage is covered in there and although security affects all remember you are a supplier not a permie so have to think a bit beyond the basic security policy.
