Or not at least your interviewer knows you care enough to look him up.

No. Go in blind, don't use the professional tool to do what it was designed for. There is no point picking up on common ground you might have or using any knowledge you can glean to your advantage. Just be as ill informed as the next grunt and you'll do fine.

But if your settings for 'Select what others see when you've viewed their profile' is set to Private Mode, they will not know that you have looked at their profile ?

Can I ask why are you stressed over this?

If you are on linkedin you are on it for people to look you up and/or connect with you. So you will not be surprised is someone looks at your profile but you can't see who they are.

I consider it standard practise to check. Likewise I expect the interviewer to check the interviewee.

People get turned down for roles when their CVs and Linkedin give different views on experience or skillset.

Some interviewers hate this some love the fact you have looked it all depends.

Best way i have found to combat this is to have two profiles, one your professional one and another a moody name and a job title of recruitment specialist (one man band) with a load of phoney groups added and experience.

That way you can have a nosey without them being notified it is you and as a hiring manager would expect recruiters to look them up. Also you get to see their profile ad experience and can direct the interview that way and talk about a subject you both know a great deal about and strike a relationship up right there.

The private browsing in chrome mentioned earlier does not stop them being notified if you are logged in adn if you are not logged in then you wont see their full profile
