    Agencies Lie

Yes I know this must be shocking news for you.

Role advertised for up to £500. Agree agency will forward me at £475 thought that may give me some advantage on the competition, not to go in at the max. But hadn't confirmed it in email (stupid, stupid mistake I know)
End client now wants me on board
Agency now says it pays up to £425, told agency that's not what I expected. Said we agreed on 475 and I even sent them screenshot of ad saying up to £500. But ok I really want the contract so I said can we agree on £450. Agency pretends they are talking to endclient and comes back 1/2 hour later saying no £425 is highest.
    So I walked away.

You are forgetting one thing. It's not always the agent that is driving the price. The fact you walked and the agent didn't ring back with a better off makes me think £425 was all he could offer. I know they lie but they aren't always in the habit of turning down the best candidate just for 50 quid in their pocket. It looks bad to the client if it all comes out.

I know my client puts (giving example numbers here) up to £500 depending on candidate. By the time it gets to the agent it says £500. We interview them and if they are borderline what my client wants the will offer less. This comes through to the contractor as £425 and the agent has no say in it.

Everything is not as your post says so bit of a rant rather than advice.

Yes it was more a rant rather than advice and just hitting myself on the head, I didn't push for an email confirmation on the rate they put me forward on.

        Name & shame
I'm waiting with this in case they will call me back (I know they very likely won't)

No point naming and shaming. It might not be the agents fault so no help to anyone to out them.

Being put forward at 475 means nothing. Client says 425 and that's the situation. Having your piece of paper saying what you've been put forward at doesn't help. Time for negotiation as you have done so see where it goes.

The first (golden) rule of the contractor (fight club !!) is.............always have a written offer via email before your CV is submitted!

Most agencies lie about rate to get a wider range of CV's then go back to the end client with this is what XYZ per day gets candidate wise etc etc

If the agency could offer more than 425 a day they would so they must be confident of getting someone similar for 425 a day (supply & demand). Supply right now is way higher than demand! Hope it all works out for you but I would call the agent back & accept the 425 offer unless you have a better one in the pipeline!

How can you tell if any agent is lying?

              Their lips are moving.

Why not get put forward at £425, nail the interview, get offered the role and then accept at rate of £500?
