I can't see how it can be done but I'd also like to see a sliding scale dependant on your attitude as well. Don't see why I should pay as much as someone just getting it because they were told to and then paying lip service to their IR35 situation.
dont see why someone as IR35-paranoid as yourself bothers to take it out at all?

do the maths and work out it's just a massive money maker for QDOS for unnecessary cover

+1 for this. I have thought this is the case for a while, e.g. late VAT payment, for example.

Insurance is for events that are unlikely to happen but if they do happen they cost a large amount to sort out.

Hence you have to have car insurance in case you injury someone severely e.g. needs constant care for the rest of their lives. Likewise you have buildings insurance in case your house burns down.

Surely that's not right. If I'm paranoid I'm more likely to take it out no? Think you've got that the wrong way around.

That's just your opinion and it's a fair one. The 1500 people QDOS defended probably won't agree and £245 quid (tax deducible) a year it's a no brainer IMO, but can respect what you are saying.

I consider those to be freak events that I have little or no control over

An IR35 investigation is very controllable assuming do everything right throughout your business life (which I'm sure NLUK does in abundance) - I think the TLC35 insurance aimed at people who know they should be inside IR35 deep down

note, I'm only talking about the "we'll pay if you lose" part i.e. TLC35, not the defence cover/IPSE cover - which I think everyone should have.

VAT inspections are random and even if you have screwed up your VAT badly it doesn't mean that HMRC will be interested in doing an IR35 investigation on you, simply because VAT inspectors have a lot of powers already to make your life hell. They may be more inclined if your VAT is straight and they can see from your invoices you have stayed at your one client for years.

paranoid was the wrong word, should have been "prepared" or "ready"

True. Obviously as you have suggested there could be a deeper, underlying, reason than just paying VAT late.
However, I do think there are triggers leading to people being investigated, in some instances.

Ah gotcha.. You know I was actually thinking about this last night on the drive home and spent a good half hour contemplating it. I then realised I'd just wasted half an hour of my time when I've paid just 245 so I don't have to. Spent the rest of the drive home whistling and thinking about beer and girls
