Security clearance should I just resign! !!!

Company I work for has just won work on Sellafield I have been with this company 12 years. In my early 20's I was a bad lad resulting in two jail terms for assault. I also have other convictions for drunk disorders. Since I came out of jail in 1997 I have been totally clean I addressed my problem which was alcohol.
I am expected to work on this nuclear site am I wasting my time applying for SC ???

Do not resign. Do be absolutely upfront with your employer and the security checkers when it comes to your past convictions. Your employer knows you now and your recent history ought to override your past.

Don't try to second guess people, generally you will fear the worst.

Would it not be DV for Sellafield?

Not if it's general contracting around the site I would have thought. DV would only be for internal control areas?

As long as you're honest and you don't have additional skeletons then you'll probably be fine, thought nobody can say for sure, you just need to go through the process.

There's nothing to lose from going through the process, as even if you are rejected, you probably won't get the boot, and even if you did, you'd be no worse off than resigning.

Hmm let me think about this.. Two option available..

            1) Apply, see what happens there is a fair chance you'll get your clearance which is pretty valuable or you may not pass but they could find you other work or..
            2) Jack it in and put yourself out of a job...

And you want to go for option two? Smart...

People don't know NLUK, they always think the worst in these sort of situations.

I don't blame the OP for panicking a bit in his situation...

Possibly but throwing the towel in isn't a sensible first option. I'd panic with a rap sheet like that as well but anyway...

To the OP there is a sticky about questions like this at the link below. Lots and lots of information given to people in similar situation so should give you a good idea what they are looking out for..

This is a fairly extreme case so I would be interested to know the outcome. I wouldn't have thought a history of alcohol and violence wouldn't have been a good start to working on a Nuclear site but at the end of the day that isn't really what SC is looking for. They are more concerned on passing secrets on for financial gain or blackmail. Even that rap sheet doesn't really indicate that could be a problem as long as your finances aren't in a mess as well.....

When I worked on a Nuclear site (not Sellafield but I was cleared to work there and went many times) and I knew zero about clearance in those days (mid 90's) my friends where questioned and asked about any empty whisky bottles etc they'd seen about my house - seriously!!!

I'm still not quite sure what level I was cleared to - I was young and carefree and didn't give a shiit to be honest, but even then I wasn't allowed to access certain PC's locked in massive steel safes. That was to do with weapons I know and the sites main function was the generate electricity. I asked the SC guy I was dealing with when I had issues earlier this year what level I was cleared to then and he said he didn't know. So much for them knowing everything...

I've said too much now so I'm going to have to kill you all.
