No you shouldn't resign even if they ask you to. They can't sack you because of past offences , but what they can do is make you redundant if you can't get security clearance.
If the worst comes to the worst, you should be given redundancy and/or allowed to work out your notice while you look for a new job.
As others have said you might even be given security clearance.

They generally just want to make sure you aren't likely to sell plutonium to weirdos in Deloreans.
You're less likely to do that just because you like beating people up. You're more likely to do it if you have a history of fraud or criminality for financial gain.
I wouldn't worry too much. There's a risk, but I don't think it's as big as you imagine.

Generally defence contracts aren't so worried about certain offences done years ago but those with the police are.
As no one can second guess the people doing the vetting there is little point asking your manager. In fact depending on the type of person the manager is they may hold it against you or rip the piss out of you.
Just complete the forms with the full truth and hide nothing.

This is a fairly extreme case so I would be interested to know the outcome. I wouldn't have thought a history of alcohol and violence wouldn't have been a good start to working on a Nuclear site but at the end of the day that isn't really what SC is looking for. They are more concerned on passing secrets on for financial gain or blackmail. Even that rap sheet doesn't really indicate that could be a problem as long as your finances aren't in a mess as well.....
I'm still not quite sure what level I was cleared to - I was young and carefree and didn't give a shiit to be honest, but even then I wasn't allowed to access certain PC's locked in massive steel safes. That was to do with weapons I know and the sites main function was the generate electricity. I asked the SC guy I was dealing with when I had issues earlier this year what level I was cleared to then and he said he didn't know. So much for them knowing everything...
I've said too much now so I'm going to have to kill you all.
