Dunno if it's true but the Clearance Officer here says she has a shed load of apps outstanding since last July, mine being one but I'm not holding out much hope for mine.

    Still says 'In Progress...'

Indeed, I just posted the same in the SC Clearance thread.

My application is 5 months and counting for a British National with previous SC Clearance.

You will achieve nothing by leaving before completing the forms or waiting on the results. You should really discuss this with your manager.

as has already been said, be open and honest and you should be ok.

Lots of government positions now only require Disclosure Scotland, like my current government role.

oh also forgot, your company will not see your criminal record declaration, only the vetting org.

Weird when I moved in girlfriend, I needed security clearance to avoid her losing her job, due to past clearance, and certain incidents in my past it took little over a week

But that was a private company that does work for the govt, rather than public sector numpties
Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the abject worship of the state.

No Socialist Government conducting the entire life and industry of the country could afford to allow free, sharp, or violently-worded expressions of public discontent.

Staffing across government varies at different times.

To answer the OP question if your job required security clearance then you would only be allowed to be employed once you got clearance.

Personally don't say anything to your manager as it could be used against you at a later date. Just answer the SC forms honestly.

                  Update

                  Update, a few years later.

I managed to get the SC clearance with that company.

I have since gone on to contract directly for several public sector departments.

All is well that ends well

Some places have a different level of clearance, even within SC - a friend of mine got clearance for the MoD but couldn't get it with a police force when he moved from the MoD.

Don't resign, though - if you do that you'll have nothing. Stick with it, and hope you pass the clearance.
As I keep pointing out, clearance is a risk assessment for a specific role (or set of roles) or an organisation. Different sites may not accept the same risk factors (MOD vs Police being a classic example, they look for different things).

You can't second guess (and if we knew how we wouldn't tell you anyway!) so fill in the forms and see what happens. There is a separate section for criminal issues that are closely guarded within the vetting agency, so even if you fail, nobody will know outside the vetters (?) and the local SSO.
