The point is that they used to be able to do it without paying, proving income or filling out paperwork.
And it's not about comparing the UK with other countries of the world, it's about how the UK has decided to make it more difficult for musicians to come and play here.

My uncle's band gigged extensively in Germany in the 1960's, and other parts of Europe. Had a rather long residency in The Star Club, Hamburg, backing Jerry Lee Lewis. They were hardly rich, although they did get to #4 in the charts at one point.

Very true. I know a lot of bands in the UK who tour in the EU and some of those even toured pre-EU and tell horrific tales of the paperwork. One band are currently putting their farewell to EU tour for this year as it will be economically impossible for them to tour in the future

If it will become economically impossible to tour in EU in the future, maybe musicians should change profession and start working in retail, farming and hospitality. Looks like these will be the only jobs british people will be able to aspire to.

If you are touring the EU and the expected revenue does not cover the cost of a £300 visa then there is a good chance you need to revisit your business model.

But if you're coming to the UK to perform 1 gig, then £300 could eat up a lot of your profits, particularly if the money has to be split several ways.

I guess you don't understand the concept of musicians playing in small venues. They don't get £20,000 as for a night's work if they are an unknown group.

I speak with a lot of UK bands who come over the Channel to play in mainland Europe because they get treated so much better. The promoter/club/venue provides not only a decent wack for playing but also meals, accomodation, etc whereas in the UK this is quite rare, in some cases the band even have to pay to play and then only get a portion of the door and over the bar takings. After the UK leaves the EU, a UK band will have to have a permit to work in each country that they visit along with the necessary insurances, they will also have to declare all their merchandise (along with country of origin) and many other aspects of touring that they never had to do. I know of one violinist who has said she will have a proboem due to the rare wood used in her instrument.

Some people say that’s never going to happen. The problem is it did happen, and it is still happening in many countries. For example, if you are a DJ in Gibraltar and you want to work in Spain, you have to fill in a carnet so that you can take your gear across the border.
It adds expense to a trip – but also, potentially time, as equipment and gear are checked at the border. Just imagine being on tour with an orchestra and having to go through every single case on the bus.

This will also be similar with EU musicians coming into the UK to play but that doesn't concern the UK because they're just foreigners and their music sounds funny and we can't understand the words..
