You'd be stupid not to have a Plan B if Brexit goes bad - so what is it?

Other than leaving the country or focusing hard on getting work overseas contracting still seems a decent way to be open to lots of options. And getting work overseas doesn't require you to stop contracting.
Work permit issue may stop us contracting abroad !!

Also some have kids / elder parents and other responsibilities in this country ... am working on a contract in EU now, and Ok with the odd contract abroad... but really eventually want to live/ retire in the UK and don't want to see the UK collapse

Bigger the collapse the better. When you decide to come back you'll be able to buy Buckinghamshire and live like a king for €1000.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

Buckinghamshire would be no good. To live like a King you'd have to buy a county palatine, such as Lancaster or Shropshire.

            Sweden wont help

Who can be granted long-term residence status?

In order to be granted long-term resident status [In Sweden], you must have lived in an EU country for at least five years with a residence permit. You must also be able to support yourself. To be granted this status, you need to apply for a special EU residence permit. Contact the Migration Agency of the country you currently live in for information about how to apply.

Please note that Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom are not covered by the rules governing long-term resident status. It is not, therefore, possible to apply for long-term resident status in these three countries.

In the past my entire income has come from contracts in Hong Kong, USA and Sweden... entirely from the UK and in some cases without meeting the people I worked with or even speaking to them other than via email/IM! It's great

However if you are from the UK you have to be there for 5 years. I doubt that will change after Brexit, so you still get it eventually.

I hope there'll be some kind of "special offer" for UK citizens, though I may already be too late. The 5 years seems to be a Schengen thing; I notice Germany has a scheme that offers permanent residency earlier, but it doesn't apply to other Schengen countries. A good reason to settle in a big country like Germany rather than one of the smaller ones and then discover you can't move around.
