Based on the testimonies, the Joint Committee on Human Rights are opening an inquiry into s58.

I will update you as soon as I know what format this will take and timescales etc.

But the main thing is that it has been accepted for review.

You are, quite simply, The Man. I cannot begin to thank you enough.

The clerk suggested we read this as there are similarities (a) in the use of retrospection and (b) in the way they received testimony from a forum.

We have also received a written submission on this matter from a group called the Voice of Britain's Skilled Immigrants ("VBSI"),[1] and been sent information about the impact of the changes by the HSMP Forum, an organisation formed to campaign against the changes.

              I'll second that.

Bumped into my MP yesterday as he was casting his vote at the same time as me. I collared him because he hadn't replied to my letter asking him to refer to the JCHR. Very apologetic, but he confirmed that he has passed it on and would be very interested in the reply. I'll take pleasure in letting him know.

The funny thing was that as I was talking to him someone walked past and quite calmly said 'you theiving b*****d' as they exited the polling station.

              Made me laugh anyway.

Do we know if the report and recommendations published by the JCHR on 2007, have the effect of repealing the suspect immigration legislation?

No, but they were instrumental in winning the 2(!) subsequent JRs - http://www.hsmpforumltd.com/index.html

The site's a little confusing but I think the upshot is that, after the initial report from JCHR in 2007, the government finally gave way just over a month ago. I think it's clear that, whatever the outcome of the upcoming hearing and/or the JCHR, there is a long way to go...
