Based on the testimonies, the Joint Committee on Human Rights are opening an inquiry into s58.

I will update you as soon as I know what format this will take and timescales etc.

But the main thing is that it has been accepted for review.

Brilliant result. Well done DR, and Everyone.

              Small Steps

A step in the right direction. Slowly but surely we will win the war, we may lose small battles on the way but it will be worth it.

The JCHR have requested a summary of the testimonies to hand out to the committee members. Thought you might also be interested in this.

                  Cheers
                  DR

87 people responded to a request for personal testimonies. Of these:
                  • 54 (62%) could not meet the demand, even if they liquidated all their assets including the family home
                  • 27 (31%) could only settle by selling (or possibly remortgaging) the family home
                  • 6 (7%) could meet the demand from savings/investments or by delaying retirement

The majority of people who responded have families, many with young children. The survey revealed that the stress and anxiety caused by s58 has created tension in a lot of relationships. A number of marriages have already broken down, and many more are under considerable strain.

Several people reported being treated for depression. Many reported problems sleeping and a number were on prescribed medication.

With all of the to-do over Brown's loss of confidence you might have missed this article:

                    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8085207.stm

It would appear that claiming money for non-existant interest on a non-existant mortgage is fine - but following the UK tax code and declaring it on your tax return isn't.
There's an elephant wondering around here...

I hope Jane Kennedy and Stephen Timms get sight of the consequences
of their actions. I don't know how they sleep at night.
