Hi all, I've been lurking for a day now. One of my friends highlighted this forum to me and I have already send an email for the details of the letter to send to my MP.

This forum is obviously a good source of information so keep up the good work.

FYI I have received closure notices for previous years too - without an investigation being opened up. Has anybody given any money to HMRC yet?

I still say the maths is irrelevant. Any revenue collected this way is 'poisoned fruits' and an ethical government shouldnt want it. If it was all about the public finances they'd pledge to raise the basic rate to 30%, they wont do that because it would be political suicide. Don't kid me its about public finances.

Can anyone please give me an example throughout history of any governing administration that could be described as 'ethical'?.....'ethical government' is an oxymoron...and Labour's policies, actions and behaviour since 1997 are certainly a long way from 'ethical'...

as far as BN66 and its retrospective element is concerned, I think the words you were looking for were nasty, vindictive, immoral, illegal, unfair, disproportionate and motivated by jealousy...can we add any others to the list?

btw I received my CNs this week...£40k was the figure...to be paid by 12 April 2009...the amount of interest is phenomenal...and that figure was for the latest 2 years - the BIG ONE (2002) hasn't even arrived yet...

how did I feel about them?...well, if you ask anyone who knows me they will tell you I am a worrier by nature...personally, I like to describe myself as a 'realist'...but when the CN dropped on my mat (I knew what it was before I'd even opened the letter) to be honest, I am totally relaxed about it all...I AM CONVINCED WE ARE GOING TO WIN THIS ONE...

yes it may take time, but we have so many arguments on our side, I am supremely confident that when it comes to the JR, when the judge is presented with the evidence of HMRCs behaviour over the past 8 years, he is going to see sense and come down on our side...

a copy of the CN has been sent to NW to appeal...the original has been thrown into the filing box marked 'WIN'...I'm not going to give it another thought...today I'm getting out into my garden to enjoy what is going to be a beautiful day...the sun is shining and the sky is blue...

Not as such but I can summarise it as follows.

Most Labour MPs are unsympathetic. One or two mavericks have shown some support.

All Tory and LibDem MPs are broadly sympathetic. Some Tories are trotting out the central office line about the state of the public finances etc. hence no promises to reverse the legislation.

Only one or two MPs (eg. John Redwood, Ed Davey) have been proactive.

Guys...here's something else that I've not seen anyone mention so I thought it worth raising here...

I sent one of DR's excellent letters to my MP...Anne Main (Cons)...I received the standard letter back...offering all the usual sympathy but no commitment to repeal if/when Conservative come to power due to the 'state of the government finances'...she then finished off her letter saying that she 'will write to Stephen Timms MP, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, to pass on your concerns directly to him.'...all standard stuff that many of us have now received...from DRs estimates it would seem that Stephen Timms now has well over 100 of these letters in his in-tray and the number is still increasing...

however, no-one has as yet received a reply...probably because there is fear on HMRCs part that they may inadvertently say something which will implicate them and weaken their case...

well, today I received another letter from my MP and attached to it was letter she has received on my behalf from the Treasury office confirming receipt of my original letter...the letter is from 'The Private Secretary' at HM Treasury acknowledging receipt of my letter...it goes on to say that my letter is 'receiving attention'...and, vitally, their is a unique reference number...

first of all, has anyone else received this 'receipt' from HM Treasury? I can't believe that I'm the only one...

secondly, I strongly believe that this is potentially a huge opportunity...now that HM Treasury have acknowledged receipt of my letter we should not let them off the hook in getting them to reply...we perhaps should leave it 14-21 days and then write directly to The Private Secretary (copying in my MP) asking them to reply to all the points raised...

I believe that if HM Treasury have acknowledged receipt then we have the right to expect a FULL AND PROMPT reply in due course...

DR...you the letter-writer extraordinaire here...what do you think? we have a direct line here to Stephen Timms and I really believe this is an opportunity that we shouldn't miss...

I think its also worth pointing out, if anyone has had their MP write to Stephen Timms and a reply hasnt been forthcoming after a few weeks, it may be worth writing again.

The treasury are going to do their best to avoid replying to our letters and slipping up or incriminating themselves.

Lets keep the pressure and momentum going on this one.

When was 30 days not 30 days?

I got up this morning to find a nice surprise. A letter from our HMRC friends (dated 16/3) advising me that if I don't pay in full by Monday week (30/3), they will be taking legal action against me to seize and auction my assets. That's nice. Even better than that the 30/3 isn't even outside of my 30 day appeal period. This started on 4/3. At least the letter dated 4/3 which arrived on 12/3 told me this. They're in a bit of a rush. Not nice. MP have sent in my appeal, but I have a bad feeling its going to get 'lost'. Bully boy tactics of the worst kind. I've written back to them, telling them I am not going to get pushed around and have forwarded the letter to my MP. Even funnier, they sent me a letter for someone else, nothing to do with the scheme. It included their name, address and National Insurance number in their original closure notice. Hmmm, lots of identity fraud lessons learnt there then. Still, at lest it wasn't a CD. I also realise that I have no doubt completely blown my 'cover' by detailing all this, but you know what? The way I feel this morning, I couldn't care less.

It would be well worth emailing NW/TQ and following up with phone call. I know that they have both spent alot of time recently getting HMRC to do their job! If you have any issues then let us know.
