What's more, the interest is a fcuking insult. It works out at just shy of 50% on the 2001/2 return.

Now, how can I get back at the b*stards...
Just checked my account on the Government Gateway and there is now suddenly a BIG payment showing due for 12 April 2009...but I haven't received anything formal thru the post yet, ie CNs...I would expect them to arrive any day now -

but given they are using 2nd Class post and there is a considerable chance that the CN could get lost on the way, can I make one recommendation to everyone out there...Please make sure you check your account on the HMRC Gateway at least once a week...it only takes a minute...

      Followup letters

I've prepared some awkward followup letters if anyone is interested.

Drop me an email and indicate whether:

      a) you've had no response from your MP at all

      b) you've had a response but they haven't raised concerns with the Treasury

      c) you've had a response, they have raised it with the Treasury but now you are bored waiting and want to hit them with something different

I have a meeting with my MP (John Redwood) on Friday - I think you have sent me c) already so thanks for that DR. I have been fobbed off with 'I've not heard back from treasury yet' but I have insisted that the meeting goes ahead so I can try and get some traction.... wish me luck

Where on the Gateway is this information? I am registered for the Self Assessment bit of the Gateway but can't seem to find any information regarding what they think I owe. I have had two CNs and appealed both but haven't had any confirmation from HMRC that they have received the appeals. No surprise there then. I was hoping I could get a status update from the gateway. Any instructions greatfully received.

I think I can speak for everyone in wishing you luck. John Redwood would be a formidable politician to have on our side.

Nice one Fog. Give it your best. We're all with you. Redwood has little to lose and much to gain.

                another one has de-lurked...

Firstly I just want to thank DR, Brillo, ASB, Emigre (and Poppy and Santa for still having a sense of humour during this mare) and all the usual posters for providing this vital information. We stand a much better chance together and with our brain power united. I believe I owe you guys a drink (yes each). When this is over I'm buying. And if we win, I'm buying more. But first I want to contribute with a quick synopsis of my situation

                - I was happy paying 25% via Ltd then the introduction of IR35. I joined MP in 2001 and was with them till 2007.

                - I have received CN's for 2001-7 and have appealed via MontP. HMRC have confiirmed receipt of the Appeals.

                - Took out a CTD which I managed to scrape together for the whole liable amount (five figures) in july 2008

                - Wrote to my local MP(lab) mid 2008. Received no reply so emailed my MEP (con). Wrote to my MP again. (I don't think the DR templates were around then but my letter had all the relevant details of the templates). This time the MP replied with a letter of 4 lines stating that my letter had been passed on to HMRC and enclosed a letter from the HMRC - which was the standard one that people have mentioned on here with all the blah blah about how they (HMRC) are right and that they will make it easy for me to pay up. No shock there then. The MEP never replied.

We just got to hang in there and keep doing what we are doing to level the field. I am so sure we will see this through with a win. HMRC have shot themselves in the foot. They should have just closed the loophole but they didn't and this government should hopefully be out by the time this is over.

The amounts are all over the gateway when I log in. There is an at a glance figure which is the amount I owe "now". Then each tax year has tax, interest and payments sections against it. Can't miss it if its there. I haven't received a CN yet, but looking at the breakdowns they made all the adjustments on the 13th March. Basically, if the information is available on line you will know

Well DR's excellent last sample letter has finally got through to my MP, Dr Phyllis Starkey.

She's agreed to forward it on to Stephen Timms and will advise me of his reply in due course.

Let's wait and see. (not holding breath)
