I have though, in the odd occasion, seen the House Of Commons on TV when there has been an MP voicing concerns on an issue to a largely empty house with an audience of say half a dozen other MPs. I couldn't help thinking 'What's the point if there are so few people there!??!?'
Indeed. Democracy at sleep, er, work. Some of us remember the efforts many MPs made to prevent cameras being allowed into the House, and now we know why. The funny thing is, probably a handful of people watch it, and even fewer will complain about the lack of presence of their MP.

New Labour doesn't care a hoot about driving thousands of people toward bankruptcy. They will have thought through the strategy on this, decided they'll lose at worst a handful of votes, and so don't care.

But they won't be chasing Big Business too hard for the tens of billions they avoid in tax. Lloyds Bank (that is, the bank we all now own) is being berated for offshoring and avoiding millions in taxes. Anyone care to bet when Gordo will close those loopholes? Never, is my bet, but certainly not retrospectively.

      Sent Letter to Frank Dobson

I sent DR's letter to my MP, Frank Dobson.

Come on everyone, let's get writing. This seems to be gaining momentum....

        Passed the 150 mark

I have now sent out 150 copies of the letter. I am sure the Poll above is in no way representative. People whose posts are still being moderated can't vote, and I have also sent it out to many lurkers.

Taking into account the number who have requested it on behalf of several people, or said they would be forwarding it on, I would imagine there must be at least 200 in circulation.

Whether it's enough to cause a stir I don't know.

A serious question, do HMRC actually ever win anything? Ive never seen a case where theyve won, they just seem to P*ss precious taxpayers money away constantly on failed litigation.

            Response to Letter

I have today received a response from John Redwood.

He says that he is not in favour of retrospective taxes and will raise my points with the minister concerned. He will let me know the minister's reply.

I'll let you know when I hear.

Its taken 13 years to sort this one out !!

We should be pressing the powers of be to invoke a 2 - 3 year time limit on all disputes. I dread to think what the legal bills were ?

well lets just say that I reckon the £3.5m is a drop in the ocean to the F&%^"£$% money HMRC have wasted on legal fees!!!! Im gettin madder and madder, honestly!!! I wonder how many peoples tax was used to pay Barristers for that M&S fight who can barely afford to support their family?? Im sure Joe public would be thrilled to know their tax is being put to such a good cause, schools, hospitals Mr Brown? Not likely hows about QC's!!!!

HMRC seem just like the police, probably bullied at school so went and got a job where they could throw their weight around under the auspices of being the law as some kind of revenge for their childhood woes...

                    Michael Mates

Has anyone else, besides macdat and moro, written to Michael Mates MP for East Hampshire?

If you live in his constituency and haven't written, now might be a good time to strike while the iron is hot.

                    Please email me.

                    Thanks
                    DR

Hi all. Another de-lurker. I joined montp in 2002, and I'm still with them. Like many others, the amounts owed are enough to pay a footballer's wages for a couple of weeks, or even second home expenses for an MP. I recieved my CNs at the end of last year. Just trying to sort out something on the CTD front.

Letter has gone off to my MP, Frank Dobson.

Thanks to the usual suspects for their excellent work on this forum. It's been a great source of inspiration, and clearly we're not going down without a fight.
