    meet your MP

meeting your MP is definitely a good idea. I have met mine twice now, for different issues....once he was not able to do anything, but he explained why and the second time he was a great help.

In this case, I would think it would help them put a face to the issue...but do follow up meeting with a letter....ideally you want to engage in a conversation with your MP, so you can build up a relationship, so when the times comes, he feels he is speaking for someone he knows, and not just a letter......obvioulsy this assumes that your MP has a heart and is at least 30% human...but thats another issue...

I've not been with Montpelier, but best of luck to you all.

Hi Brillo, I joined up with the scheme in July 2002 and am still a Montpelier client now. I've received CNs for each year 2002-2007, all of which have been appealed by Montpelier, so have a lot of money tied up in the results of this business. I can't afford CTDs without remortgaging my home, so was rather waiting to see how it all pans out. I probably have just enough equity available to pay the full demand, but, clearly that's not what I had in mind - thought I might actually retire at some point !

I have modified DR's letter to my circumstances and will get it sent to my MP today. Well done you chaps - keep up the good work.

DR i'll be after the letter. I wrote using the link provided on this forum many many months ago to Glenda Jackson my MP (probably about 9), and never received a reply. I guess Oscar winning actresses are just above all this...

So will be more than happy to send another, and ask why she didn't reply to the first....

Don't use email to contact MPs

We have found that email is unreliable.

Stick to the old fashioned method. The format of a printed letter looks better and it shows a bit more effort has gone into it.

After all, what's the cost of a stamp compared to what we are facing!!!

Good point. I will take any reference to this off the front page.

                Copy of letter please

I wrote to my MP a long while ago before the bill was passed and it went to Royal Assent. However, I never received even an acknowledgement sadly. However, I am happy to sent a copy of the current letter to show solidarity.

Please could you send me a copy or let me know where I can get it.

                Many thanks.

Have you already written to your MP?

As long as it was a few months ago, then there is nothing stopping you writing again.

I am even suggesting that people write afresh and don't make any reference to earlier correspondence. If you think about it, if they see a previous reference then they may not look at it in a new light.

The opening sentence needs to hit them right between the eyes eg.

I am writing to you because my family is facing financial ruin as a direct consequence of a recent Act of Parliament, namely Section 58 Finance Act 2008.
Even Labour MPs might take notice of this.

Since Labour and Lib Dem members of the Treasury Committee were vociferous in their opposition, and tabled amendments to remove the retrospection, I wonder what are the chances of getting a commitment from the opposition parties to repeal the retrospective elements following the general election. It might take the wind out of HMRC's sails and help our cause in the JR, of course this may be pie in the sky, but I recall someone getting a letter from a Tory MP stating they would look at the technicalities of repealing the law. A commitment from them to do so may have some effect.

anyone have David Davies as an MP, he would be with us on this I'm sure...

Just a thought of course, I'm looking at every possibility to save my family from financial ruin...

Incidentally, I tried to get a fat cat as my avatar but it doesn't show, anyone know why?

I think you meant Tory and Libdem. Most of the Labour MPs didn't utter a single word, and as we know one Labour MP has since admitted he didn't know what he was voting for.

I think there is a chance of the Tories doing something but I don't think we will get a commitment.

Interestingly, the QC representing one of the other firms reckons that S58 is only a discretionary tax ie. it is not compulsory for HMRC to collect it. All it would take is a direction from Govt and they could drop it.
