What should I do with old cheque books?

What should I do with old company cheque books?

I've never known this for my personal account and so have them all going back 20 years.

But what about the business account? Do I need to keep these old finished cheque books for 7 years? 6 months? Shred them as soon as they are used up?

I mean from a company perspective, not the bank's!

For example, is there a legal requirement to keep them as part of the company records?

If you have invoices and receipts showing payment has been made, I dont see the need to retain the actual method of payment ie cheque book stubb or on line statement etc.

          I'd shred them.

            But then, I keep everything.

I have receipts going back 40 years... and checkbook stubs going back 36.

You won't be so complacent when his cunning plan (based around forty year old receipts) kicks in...

I keep records for seven years. After that - shred.

Something you use to send money to HMRC that takes them a lot more effort to process...
