I applied to the Wolverhampton office back in April, they have asked for more information eg proof of contract, business plan etc about 6 weeks ago.
I called them a couple of weeks ago and they were processing my application.
However after coming back form holiday I had nothing, so i called them.

They have sent it off for further checks and advised me that it could take much much longer...

Anyone know what other checks they will be doing ??

Did you put something on the invoices to indicate that VAT registration had been applied for?

If so, and the invoice dates fall within the dates the IR have given you for VAT registration, I don't think they can refuse.
I could be wrong though, and I have no Idea who you would contact to 'force' them to pay...

My application is at Wolverhampton, I called them to say they were doing further checks, then I had the letter saying "we're doing further checks, dont call us for 15 weeks!". I applied End of March, still waiting...

Don't call for 15 weeks.... what sort of checks take that long... !! Unless they want to see if contracts get renewed/extended ? I only sent them a copy of my 6 month contact

I applied in April and am still waiting. Been told to wait until October and not to call them. By October my company would have earned more than £70k in this tax year and still not invoicing with VAT !!!!!????

Hmm applied early July at County Down office. Haven't heard anything from them, by the look of it I won't have the VAT number until end of this year!

You've been told to wait until October? Are you serious?!!

I'm in a similar position. I started my contract in February. Was previously contracting via an umbrella company, then decided to sack them and go down the Ltd Co route. My accountant said he'd sort out my VAT registration for me and get me on the Flat Rate scheme, said it would take about 4-6 weeks so I left him to it.

I was advised at work that I needed to be VAT registered and would have to provide evidence of my VAT certificate to be allowed to create timesheets (and hence invoices) in their system. Anyway, after 4 or 5 weeks I called up the accountant to check on the status of things and he advised me he hadn't bothered to register me because I wouldn't need it until I'm at the threshold... !!!! Yet he was the one who'd previously suggested applying early and the benefits of the FRS!

So by then it was early April. I decided to apply for the VAT/Flat Rate scheme myself. And I've been waiting and waiting and waiting...

Had a letter about a month ago to provide contracts and stuff, which I faxed in immediately. I've heard nothing back other than a letter saying "please do not call us to chase registrations as this is causing delays". They said most applications are being processed within 15 weeks at the moment. Well I've already waited longer than that.

And basically due to my accountant being useless in the first place, HMRC holding things up and the HR people at work not allowing me onto their timesheet system, it means I haven't been paid at all in six months I've lost out on 6 months worth of free business banking as nothing's been paid in and 6 months worth of interest.

I was previously told that I wasn't allowed to raise pro-forma invoices etc. I've now been told otherwise, by the "new" HR guy. This week I've been added to the timesheets system and raised 6 months worth of invoices. Hopefully I might get paid soon...

But where is my VAT number?!!

I applied back in June and got my VAT registration certificate last weekend, after having to send in proof of a contract.

Then yesterday I get another VAT registration certificate along with a CD-ROM guide to VAT.

So, if anyone wants a VAT certificate, I've one going spare
