HMRC Audit email

Hi there

Director of Ltd company ( IT contracting )

I got a call from HMRC about random audit, verified it is actually HMRC by giving a call to the customer service.

The audit officer sent me an email saying we are going to use email for communication etc and I've replied saying its fine ( Also asked my accountant to reply saying he is happy to use email to share details )

It has been a month since I haven't got a reply, don't know what should I do ? Do I need to follow up ? and leave it to them, to get back to me

Any thoughts please ?

A month is not a long time in HMRC land!

If you've provided them everything they've asked for, it's just a waiting game. Yes it is a bit depressing that they often give you circa 2 weeks to get information to them, then they take 2+ months to respond.

Did they say which kind of audit? IR35? VAT? Have you used any Umbrella schemes that promise enhanced returns?

So long as you have provided the details they're after, i'd just leave it there and try not worry about it.

He said it is VAT ( And over the phone he mentioned an overview of the docs they need ) I told him you can get the docs from my accountant ( like VAT submission history, 2 years SA returns, etc ) So I asked to email myself and accountant ( the email is just saying we can use email to share details, he didn't actually say what docs needed from my accountant )

They didn't ask for any doc, just a generic email saying are we happy to use email as a mode of communication ( And asking myself and the accountant to agree using email to share details - financial docs )

Just bear in mind that an IR35 review can begin with a VAT audit and things said in the very early stages of an HMRC review can prove very damaging in the end, so make sure you have the right people involved from the start.

Your accountant should be able to bat this off for you. I had something like this many years ago in my early days and the accountant said it isn't as uncommon as you think. I was told they haing a cursory glance to make sure everything looks in order on the face of it. They aren't after a full pants down review. My accountant sent the numbers, responded to some queries and it went away for me. If your numbers don't match, big holes in your finances and ridiculous numbers where there shouldn't be then it should be a simple exercise.

If you have any insurance in place for your Ltd Co relating HMRC inquiries, notify them immediately before doing anything else.
